Carbon Sequestration & the Environment
As your tree grows in Tullymore it can help offset your carbon usage. Every time you take a flight or drive your car you are responsible for releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, helping to create greenhouse gases. However, as your woodland grows in Tullymore it will absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere thus offsetting your greenhouse gas usage. This process is known as 'Carbon Sequestration'.
Carbon Sequestration involves removing carbon dioxide from the environment and storing it in a 'sink' which curtails its release into the atmosphere. During photosynthesis trees absorb carbon dioxide and convert much of it into wood. A wood therefore 'sucks up' atmospheric pollution, retaining it within its cellular structure until it is burnt or decays. Native broadleaf trees such as oak therefore offer even greater benefits as they have a longer lifespan.
Carbon sequestration has proved to be a controversial subject among some Non Governmental Organisation's and academics. However, we at NatureHug believe that there is merit in the concept. We don't offer it as the sole solution to Global Warming but we think it can help. It is a positive side effect of restoring Ireland's natural heritage. We also believe in the use of wood. Wood from sustainable sources is one of the most environmentally friendly products on the globe. More wood means less steel, concrete and plastic; materials which aren't all that good for the environment.
Our woods are more than just trees; they are living communities of wildlife, flowers and insects coexisting in a natural ecosystem. We at NatureHug aim to promote this biodiversity in a way which is sympathetic to the landscape and to our natural heritage.
Psychology and Nature
There is also scientific evidence that contact with nature can have positive psychological benefits i.e it can make you happy!
Man's deep rooted need for a bond with nature has a number of proponents. Two of the best known are Michael J Cohen, pioneer of 'Integrated Ecology', and Edward O Wilson for his Biophillia Concept. This concept states that people have an inherent biological need to be in contact with the out of doors.
